Initially the real struggle is to find the right tools. It takes immense amount of trial and error, and much investment to find the tools that work for you. In this post, I am going to talk about the types of brush pens, the tips sizes and flexibility and which brush pens work for me. I will also link my recommendations right here for you to get your hands on them.
Brush pens are great for calligraphy because they are much easier to get started with compared to your traditional dip pen and ink. The learning curve is less steeper as well as the maintenance aspect. Even if you are a beginner, you need to understand a few things before you choose your preferred brush pen.
Firstly, let's understand the different types of brush pens tips
This is where we tend to go wrong the most. There are three main types of brush tips: natural hair (made from animal hair), synthetic bristle (generally constructed of nylon), and felt. Felt tips are good for beginners because their firm, marker-like tips offer good control. They do come in a few sizes though. Natural hair and synthetic bristle brushes are softer, so they require more practice to use.
Secondly, the firmness of the brush pen tip
The tips range from soft to hard depending on the bristle type, density, and size. Felt tips tend to be firmer than bristle tips and produce controlled strokes. Nylon and natural hair tips offer more flexibility and respond best to subtle hand movements. However, they require extra practice to master.
Thirdly, the size of the brush pen tip
There are 3 sizes available out there. Fine, medium and broad. Varying brush tip thicknesses can be advantageous for different uses. Fine tips allow for more detail and come closet to creating calligraphy with a pointed pen. Broad tips feel smoother to write with and create bold, expressive strokes and are great for larger artworks.
Now here are few of my brush pen recommendations. With right direction and practice, you can learn how to create some beautiful calligraphy without struggling with the tools :)
